Derek Katzenbach’s award-winning, 18K kaleidoscope features 71.74 total carats of Maine tourmaline and 60.05 total carats of Maine quartz between three separate lenses.

GIA Alumni Derek Katzenbach, a custom jeweler, stone cutter and artist created a Spectrum award-winning 18K yellow gold kaleidoscope titled “Colors of Maine” featuring 71.74 total carats of Maine tourmaline and 60.05 total carats of Maine quartz. He found inspiration in reflection and his fascination with the way light bounces off of different cuts and patterns. Katzenbach created CAD renderings of his design before building the kaleidoscope, which took 3 months to construct.  This is on display at GIA Carlsbad with other pieces created by Derek all highlighting tourmaline from both Maine and California.
