Lab Class Description

Learn the time-tested procedures and identification skills used by the Institute’s renowned experts. Gain confidence using a microscope, a refractometer with polarizing filter and a removable magnifying eyepiece, refractive index (RI) liquid, a polariscope, a dichroscope, a spectroscope, and a loupe. Identify natural gemstones, imitations, and synthetics. Discover effective testing procedures for colored stones now in circulation.

During this class, you may come into contact with chemicals, so if you are pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or have allergies, you should contact your physician for advice. Be sure to read the Chemical Safety Disclosure on page 20 of the Education Catalog.
