Seminars by GIA Experts at the Show
This is the second of two seminars offered during the shows happening on Sunday, March 4 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Identification of Copper-Bearing Elbaite and Liddicoatite Tourmalines
Presented by Dr. Yusuke Katsurada, GIA Staff Gemologist/Scientist, Tokyo Laboratory
Sunday, March 4
Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Room S226
Free Seminar: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Copper-bearing tourmalines are one of the most popular colored gemstones in the marketplace for the vivid blue to green color, and are often referred to as “Paraíba” or “Paraíba-type” tourmaline by the trade. They were first mined in the late 1980s from the Paraíba state in northeastern Brazil. Years after this initial discovery, similar gem-quality tourmalines colored by copper and manganese were found elsewhere in Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique. They were believed to be elbaite species but liddicoatite, another species of tourmaline, has recently been found in the Paraíba tourmaline market. This presentation covers general information on the identification of these copper-bearing elbaite and liddicoatite tourmalines and their geographic origins.
Seminar seating is limited. Register with the show services, or call GIA at +852 3166 7000 or email hklabinfo@gia.edu
