The Science of Origin Determination for Colored Stones
Origin determination is increasingly vital as the gem industry emphasizes transparency and responsible sourcing. Starting in 2026, GIA will launch redesigned Colored Stone Reports that present findings more clearly and effectively.
This seminar outlines the core science behind origin assessment, including key analytical methods, field research, and gemological indicators. Shane will introduce GIA’s updated reports and expanded origin services for opal, peridot, and demantoid garnet, alongside established reporting for major colored stones for sapphire, ruby, emerald and jade etc.
