Metro Phoenix Chapter: Meteorites with Dr. Carleton Moore

Join us for an out-of-this-world evening with Dr. Carleton Moore, founding director of Arizona State University’s Center for Meteorite Studies, one of the largest and most important collections of meteorites in the world.

The use of meteorites and moldavite in jewelry is increasing. This presentation should not only capture imaginations, but enable us to speak knowledgably to customers. Scientists know that meteorites come from the Asteroid Belt, Mars and the Moon. Some fall and are soon discovered; others that fell many years ago can be recognized by comparing them to known meteorites. Dr. Moore will discuss and show us several different kinds of meteorites, which range from nickel-iron to stony in composition. He will bring samples from Mars, the Moon and other locations, as well as meteorite-related objects such as tektikes and moldavite.

Dr. Moore is an accomplished scientist who has written more than 200 published papers, authored several books and edited the Meteoritical Society’s journal for 20 years. He was chosen by NASA to analyze over 200 lunar rock samples from the Apollo 11-17 missions and mentored a graduate student whose 1996 discovery of possible fossils in Martian meteorites primed the start of the NASA Astrobiology program. In 2000, the International Astronomical Union renamed Asteroid 5046 “Carletonmoore” in his honor.

Don’t miss what should be a fascinating and very enjoyable evening!
