From Alexandrite to Zircon: The Online Destination for Gem Information

GIA launches Gem Encyclopedia, alumni directory and more

CARLSBAD, Calif. – April 30, 2013 – Consumers, students, rock hounds and members of the gem and jewelry industry can immerse themselves in the premier online destination for gem information. The results of GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) more than eight decades of gemological research are now available in a streamlined, content-rich and easy-to-navigate online format. The new website, which launched in mid-March, debuts its anticipated Gem Encyclopedia, an alumni directory and Research & News pages today.

From alexandrite to zircon, and from rough to polished, the Gem Encyclopedia takes visitors on a virtual journey through the science and lore of more than 20 gems from across the globe. Each gem page features gemological information, a buyer’s guide, history and lore, quality factors, a map of gem localities, examples of famous stones, research, and details about synthetics, treatments and imitations. Comprehensive information is supplemented with eye-catching photography, video and user-friendly navigation tools.

The new Research & News section features content from GIA global researchers and subject matter experts, including field reports, market analyses and the latest research updates. GIA’s scientific journal Gems & Gemology (G&G), which will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year, debuts in a new desktop format accessible via computers and popular tablet and smart phone devices. The launch features the most recent Spring 2013 issue, and in addition to articles and regular features like Lab Notes and Gem News International, the desktop version also includes easy access to all archived issues and articles dating back to 1934.

The Institute’s improved Alumni Directory gives visitors a robust experience; consumers and other parties will be able to search GIA graduates by location and credentials. GIA graduates will be able to update their own information to ensure all of their contact details are up-to-date.

The new website supports GIA’s mission of educating the public on gems and jewelry.
