The Fame and Notoriety of Mogok Gems
GIA’s next Gemstone Gathering is Feb. 26 in Bangkok
BANGKOK – Feb. 19, 2014 – The historical significance of the Mogok region of Myanmar as a gemstone source has captivated both the global trade and consumers for centuries. Federico Bärlocher, an expert in Mogok gems, will discuss the notoriety and mystery surrounding one of the world’s most famous gem mining districts during GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) Gemstone Gathering in Bangkok on Feb. 26.The presentation will provide a comprehensive update – using exclusive videos and photos – about the famous gem mining region of Mogok, Myanmar. In addition to discussing famous natural rubies from the area and other gems, Bärlocher will provide anecdotal details about the life of miners in the area.
Bärlocher, a gem and crystal dealer with more than 30 years of experience, specializes in gems, melo pearls and crystals from East Asia with an emphasis on Myanmar and the Mogok region. His career has taken him to some of the world’s most remote areas in countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Tanzania. He regularly deals in rare, untreated gems from Mogok including ruby, sapphire, spinel, peridot and moonstone.
GIA’s Gemstone Gathering, a free event, begins at 6 p.m. on February 26 in the “Crowne Room 1-3” on the 21st floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Lumpini Park in Bangkok.
