Tokyo Education Closure Announcement

GIA Tokyo’s education operations will close on November 29, 2019. The GIA Tokyo laboratory operations will not change.

GIA continually evaluates our global locations. The difficult decision to close our Tokyo education operation to align the Institute’s resources with our mission priorities was made after careful analysis and consideration.

GIA Tokyo Godo Kaisha has offered the Diamond Grading Lab Class and the Diamond Essentials Intensive certificate course in Japanese since November 2017. GIA made a significant investment in the infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality educational services in Japanese, including technology, facilities, staff, equipment, gemstones, course materials, and translations. The low demand for GIA courses in Japanese, combined with high overhead costs, made our education operation in Tokyo unsustainable.

GIA will no longer offer Japanese-language educational services. Students who wish to continue their GIA education may enroll in English-language or other courses through another GIA location. Visit https://www.gia.edu/gem-education/campuses for more information.

GIA’s Education Department, located in Carlsbad, California, U.S., will serve as the record retention center for the Tokyo location. Students may order transcripts or replacement diplomas or certificates by contacting records@gia.edu.

We thank the GIA faculty and staff, as well as the students and alumni in Japan, for their support of GIA and we will continue to provide education programs and services from our other GIA locations.
