GIA recommends the use of good laboratory practices when using or being exposed to Refractive Index (RI) liquid, which contains Diiodomethane. RI liquid is used in Graduate Colored Stones program, the Gem Identification Lab Class, and the Student Workroom. You may need to exercise special precaution if you are pregnant, if you have certain medical conditions, and if you have sensitivity to, or are allergic to, this chemical. If you are unsure, contact your doctor for advice.
GIA provides protective gloves and appropriate disposal containers in each classroom. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is posted in each classroom. GIA will provide a copy of it on request.
