  • Assignment 1: Inside GIA Education I

Do you need to know what’s going on in the rapidly changing diamond industry? Do you need to know how the current global economic crisis is affecting the jewelry industry? These and other hot topics are the latest installments in our exclusive series of Inside GIA Education audio podcasts. The podcasts also cover other wide-ranging topics, such as auctions and “origin gemology.” Part I covers the period July–December 2008.

  • Assignment 2: Diamonds Mine to Market

The path a diamond travels from the mine to a piece of finished jewelry is long, complex, and perilous. “Diamonds Mine to Market” will show you the great lengths men will go to in order to find that precious diamond and the many steps the diamond must endure as it makes its way to your jewelry box. The podcast features footage shot around the globe to help you gain new appreciation for this most sought-after gem.

  • Assignment 3: Interview with Cody Opals, Tucson 2008

As a 12-year-old schoolboy, Andrew Cody visited Coober Pedy on a school excursion and found his destiny. The year was 1964, and at the time opal miners would simply throw away lower grade, more difficult to sell opals. Wide-eyed Andrew walked up and down the main street of Coober Pedy stuffing his pockets with discarded opals--and so began his life-long love affair with this fascinating gem. Today he and his brother Damien are Co-Directors of Cody Opal, and Andrew is World President of the International Colored Gemstone Association. In this exclusive interview with GIA, conducted at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, Andrew enthusiastically discusses his favorite gem and its place in the market.

  • Assignment 4: Colored Stone Mining in East Africa

Tension above ground. Tension below ground. That's pretty much the situation in East Africa's exotic tanzanite mining area. Nestled in the Meralani Hills of Tanzania is the world's only supply of tanzanite. The area provides a compelling study of the coexistence between a large, well-funded mining company and small, independent mining operations.
    Podcast release date: June 8.

  • Assignment 5: Inside GIA Education II

Audio podcasts covering the period Jan-June 2009. Podcasts become available July 6.

  • Assignment 6: Tsavorite Mining and Formation

Interview with Campbell Bridges. Podcast becomes available September 7.
