GIA Gem Database

In 2005, GIA purchased an extraordinary gem collection from the estate of the renowned Swiss gemologist Dr. Edward J. Gübelin. The collection, consisting of more than 2,800 pieces and representing at least 225 gem materials and mineral species, was assembled by Dr. Gübelin over more than 70 years.

The GIA Gem Database will represent a permanent repository of data on significant gems in the Gübelin collection. Each gemstone will undergo standard gemological testing, and be analyzed by a variety of spectroscopic techniques (Raman, visible, photoluminescence and infrared), as well as EDXRF. Equally significant, GIA will make this data available to the public and the gemological community on the Web. No comparable resource exists.
