With standard PL microscopy, a single spot (shown as a green circle in the figure) is analyzed and represents only a small volume of the actual sample. With PL mapping, numerous spots are collected in a raster pattern (indicated by the dashed red arrows on the right), and the data are interpolated and combined to produce a PL map. Spot size is not to scale.
