More than 300 attendees, 55 recruiters and 20 industry experts participate

CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 16, 2011 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) hosted its first GIA Career Fair in India in collaboration with the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) on March 14 at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. The event attracted more than 300 attendees, 55 recruiters and 20 industry experts.

GIA Career Fair in India brought together gem and jewelry leaders, executives and entrepreneurs who gathered to build bridges between companies looking for resources and talented individuals seeking a profession in the industry.

“Given the vast career opportunities this industry offers, especially in India’s growing market, there is no better time to create a platform that connects potential employers and employees,” said Nirupa Bhatt, managing director of GIA India & Middle East. “With the support of GJEPC and the industry, I am confident we’ll be hosting more events that highlight the tremendous careers available in gems and jewelry.”

The event, which was free to attendees, offered panel discussions on the growth opportunities in the Indian gems and jewelry industry along with one-on-one mentoring and recruiting sessions. The roster of more than 20 domain experts included Sanjay Kothari, GJEPC vice chairman; Vinod Hayagriv, Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation chairman; Bina Goenka, jewelry designer; Amish Turakhia, a young entrepreneur and the president of the GIA Alumni Chapter in Mumbai; Gautam Gulati of Kiah; Saunak Parikh of Mahendra Brothers; and Ashish Kothari of Jewelex.

Recruiters included diamond and jewelry manufacturers, retailers, national retail chains, publishing houses, grading and education service providers and marketing agencies. The participating organizations included Dimexon, Mahendra Brothers, Kama Schachter, HK Designs, C Krishaniah Chetty & Sons, Titan and Orra and other firms.

Incepted 20 years ago, GIA Career Fair has been annually held at the Institute’s corporate headquarters in Carlsbad, California and in conjunction with U.S. trade shows. This is the first GIA Career Fair that has been conducted outside of the U.S.

“We are thrilled to expand this program internationally, specifically in markets where the industry is experiencing dynamic growth,” said Kathryn Kimmel, GIA vice president and chief marketing officer, and the founder of GIA Career Fair. “This event enables us to better serve our constituents around the globe by showcasing available positions that may be otherwise inaccessible. In addition, it helps the industry flourish by bringing in new talent and skill sets.”
