Sapphire: Country of Origin Determination Seminar

Sri Lanka is a legendary source of sapphires that much sought after by collectors. Shown here are rough (32.7 ct) and cut (33.16 ct.) sapphires from Sri Lanka. Courtesy of Thomas Schneider (rough) and B&B Fine Gems (cut).

Learn how to determine a sapphire's source and how source affects value.

The value of high-end colored stones can increase dramatically based on their origins, which is why ‘country of origin’ has become the most important value factor to consider, in addition to the quality factors of individual stones such as color, size and shape. Sapphire is one of the most challenging gems to analyze for country-of-origin determination due to its unique chemical properties and significant overlap of inclusion scenes across multiple sources.

This seminar will introduce the main sources of sapphire around the globe, their status in the market, and the methods the GIA Laboratory applies to determine sapphire country of origin, including identifying inclusion scenes, trace element profiling and spectroscopic analyses.

This seminar is ideal for sales associates, retailers, investors, collectors and researchers. Familiarity with colored stone value factors is recommended.
