Why does aquamarine cost so much more than blue topaz, which is almost the same colour?
Blue topaz is more common because the colour is produced by treating colourless topaz with radiation. Aquamarine is more rare in nature, especially in fine colour. Its long history as a gem also adds to its collectability.
