Chemical Safety Disclosure

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) recommends the use of good laboratory practices while using or being exposed to refractive index (RI) liquid, which contains diiodomethane. You will use RI liquid when using a refractometer, which you will come into contact with directly or indirectly in various courses, lab classes or in GIA's Student Workroom. You may need to exercise special precautions if you are pregnant, if you have certain medical conditions or if you have sensitivity to, or are allergic to, this chemical. If you are unsure, contact your doctor for advice.

GIA provides protective gloves and appropriate disposal containers in each classroom. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is posted in each classroom and GIA will provide a copy on request.
