AGS Ideal® Report by GIA

On 19 October GIA and AGS announced that AGS Laboratories will integrate into GIA, combining their gemmological research efforts to develop new GIA products and services to protect consumers and support the trade.

Recognising the significant contribution of AGS Laboratories to the industry and consumer trust, the AGS Ideal® Report will be available from GIA as a digital-only supplement to GIA diamond reports for eligible D-to-Z natural and laboratory-grown round brilliant and fancy shape diamonds.

GIA will create an endowment to support AGS and its membership through education and qualifications, furthering the Society’s efforts to develop the next generations of educated, ethical professional jewellers and industry leaders.

AGS and GIA have a long history of cooperation, and will continue to cooperate closely, while remaining separate organisations.

What is the AGS Ideal® Report by GIA?

GIA will offer the AGS Ideal® Report as a supplement to eligible GIA diamond grading reports.

The AGS Ideal® Report by GIA is a digital-only report that will be available for eligible colourless (D-to-Z) natural and laboratory-grown round brilliant and fancy shape diamonds. The AGS Ideal® Report by GIA may be requested with or without an AGS Laboratories computer-generated light-performance map known as an Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool® (ASET®).

From 28 November 2022, AGS clients with an approved GIA laboratory account may submit diamonds directly to GIA for a GIA diamond report and a supplemental AGS Ideal® Report by GIA.

In early January 2023, all GIA clients will be able to request the supplemental reports. Further details about the supplemental AGS Ideal® Report from GIA will be available soon.

What is the relationship between GIA and AGS Laboratories, and why are we providing this service?

GIA and AGS are sibling non-profit organisations, both founded by Robert M. and Beatrice Shipley in the 1930s. Both organisations have shared consumer-protection missions.
GIA and AGS will combine their gemmological research efforts, by integrating AGS Laboratories' unique expertise, intellectual property and technology into GIA's offering. This will help us to develop new GIA products and services to protect consumers and support the trade.

Where is the AGS Ideal® Report by GIA available?

In January 2023, all GIA laboratory locations will offer the AGS Ideal® Report by GIA.

How is the AGS Ideal® Report by GIA different from a GIA report, and how can I get one?

A GIA grading report provides information on the diamond’s 4Cs, whereas the AGS Ideal® Report by GIA provides a light-performance grade by analysing its ability to find light.

At this time, AGS clients with an approved GIA laboratory account may request an AGS Ideal® Report by GIA, with or without an ASET®, at the time of initial submission to GIA for a primary diamond grading service. The AGS Ideal® Report by GIA will be expanded to be available to all GIA clients in January 2023.
