London Open Day


GIA in London invites you to attend its 12th annual Open Day to learn more about how to build a successful career in the world of gems and jewelry. Open Day takes place on Friday, June 15, in the afternoon with guests welcome to drop in and visit from 12:30 to 6 p.m.
 
"Our Open Day provides an ideal opportunity to learn more about GIA’s presence in the industry and beyond, alongside with general facts about gems, gemology and the world of design,” says Mehdi Saadian, director of the London campus. “If you are curious about gemology or the professions available in this field, we welcome you to come and meet our instructors, staff and students, ask questions and learn more.”
 
Open Day events – all free of charge – include presentations on diamonds, colored stones and pearls. Open classrooms will feature information about the Comprehensive CAD/CAM for Jewelry, as well as gemology and jewelry design courses with some hands-on practice available.
 
You will be able to meet GIA faculty and students to hear what it is like to study at GIA and the positive impact it can have on your life and career. Admissions staff will answer questions about GIA’s world-class diploma program and courses and explain the application process.

What is Gemology? 
1:00 to 1:45 p.m.
Gemology is the practical study of gemstones. This presentation introduces GIA’s curriculum, which is designed to assist jewelers worldwide in the identification, grading, buying and selling of gemstones and jewelry.
 
The Other Big 3 
2.00 to 2:45 p.m.
Ruby, sapphire and emerald are the most well-known colored stones in the market. However, there are other gems that dominate a large section of the colored stones industry and can command very high prices, similar to those of the big three. In this presentation we will discuss the attributes, sources and lore of tanzanite, aquamarine and tourmaline. These three gems are very important to the colored stone industry; they’re beautiful in their own right and attractive to consumers looking for something a little different from the big three.
 
Jewelry Design: Creativity and Creation through GIA Education  
2.00 to 2:45 p.m.
Creativity and creation is the heart and soul of Jewelry Manufacturing Arts. GIA course offerings delve into the world of jewellery design and production through hands-on, action-oriented coursework. This brief presentation covers the Jewelry Manufacturing Arts program and courses, as well as the common career paths for graduates.
 
Diamonds – Are They Forever?
3:00 to 3:45 p.m.
Known as the most enduring of gems, the durability of a diamond is defined by three properties. This presentation on the 4Cs of diamonds will introduce these three properties, as well as discuss how diamonds can be treated to alter appearance, the possible effects of treatment and how to care for diamond jewelry.

What is CAD/CAM and How Is It Changing the Industry? 
3:00 to 3:45 p.m.
GIA’s Jewelry Manufacturing Arts team presents an interactive session on what CAD/CAM is and how it is changing the industry. CAD/CAM uses 3-D modeling programs that allow us to create a physical model of a piece for mass production purposes. It has revolutionized the jewelry industry, as we can now create intricate forms that were not previously possible using traditional goldsmithing techniques.
 
The Allure of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald 
4:00 to 4:45 p.m.
Ruby, sapphire and emerald have fascinated and seduced humankind for thousands of years. By reviewing the history, lore and inherent characteristics of these magnificent gemstones, this presentation will explore the factors contributing to their adoration and significance in the market.
 
History and Value Factors of Pearls 
4:00 – 4:45 p.m.
Diving into the fascinating world of pearls, this presentation will provide an introduction to pearl formation, the predominant types of pearls found in the market, the seven value factors used by GIA to classify pearls and how to care and clean pearl jewelry.
 
How to Study with GIA  
5:00 - 5:15 p.m.
GIA provides a wide array of gemological and jewelry design educational programs. This presentation will outline GIA's programs of study, the many ways to complete its educational programs and the locations of GIA campuses worldwide.

There will also be hands-on practice throughout the day and the opportunity to meet and talk with current students and GIA staff members.
