GIA on Diamond Cut Series Now Available in Print-Friendly Format

The assessment of diamond cut appearance has become a major topic for discussion within the diamond industry. The world’s most respected gemological research team at GIA has examined this issue at length. In recent years, GIA has used computer modeling and thousands of diamond observations to focus on the specific ways in which a diamond's proportions affect its appearance. Results from this research have been published in Gems & Gemology (Fall 1998, Fall 2001). GIA Research has also provided a series of short articles which explain the basis of their cut research, and discuss key issues in the assessment of proportions for round brilliant cut (RBC) diamonds. The GIA on Diamond Cut series has now been converted into print-friendly PDF files that are available for download through GIA’s Web site.

The articles present summaries and discussions of foundational material related to the study, and include information taken from the fields of gemology, physics, optics, computer modeling, and diamond history. Past topics include the 4Cs, diamond optics, Marcel Tolkowsky, the scientific method, and the graphic presentation of information.

“We felt that bringing this diverse information together would give our audience a better understanding of how the proportions of an RBC diamond affect various appearance factors such as brilliance, fire, and scintillation,” said Thomas M. Moses, vice president of Identification and Research Services for GIA. “We’re pleased to make these articles available in an easy-to-download format where they can be printed and referred to as background for future technical articles that GIA will produce on this subject.”
