GIA Donates to Casa de Amparo

Staff and students give toys, supplies, and monetary contributions to children in need

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Dec. 19, 2011 – GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) staff and students at the Carlsbad world headquarters donated 347 items and $1,735 in cash to Casa de Amparo, a San Diego nonprofit organization focused on treating and preventing child abuse and neglect, as part of its annual Holiday Gift Drive.

Among the 347 donations, items included bicycles, electronics, musical instruments, housewares, baby supplies, board games, school materials, stuffed animals and more.

“The Institute is honored to support Casa de Amparo in its efforts to help these children heal, grow and create the bright futures they deserve,” said Donna Baker, president and CEO of GIA. “Carlsbad staff and students embraced the charity’s mission and our donation areas overflowed with toys and household items that will make a difference to local children this holiday season.”

The mission of Casa de Amparo, which roughly translates to “House of Refuge,” is to support children affected by, or at risk of, abuse or neglect. It offers a range of programs and services designed to promote healing, growth and healthy relationships. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been in operation in San Diego County since 1978.

“We deeply appreciate GIA’s generosity and help in making the holidays brighter for abused and neglected children in San Diego,” said Donna Greenbush, marketing manager of Casa de Amparo. “Seeing the light in their eyes when they open holiday presents is a gift to us and to our supporters.”

Now in its 15th consecutive year, the GIA Holiday Gift Drive supports one local San Diego-based charity each year.
