“Gemological Heresies” is Topic of Next GIA Gemstone Gathering
Bangkok event to feature Ruby & Sapphire author
CARLSBAD, Calif. – June 17, 2011 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) announced today that “Gemological Heresies” will be the topic of the Institute’s 47th Gemstone Gathering on June 29 in Bangkok. Richard W. Hughes, a well-known gemstone expert and award-winning author, will provide the presentation.
Hughes will challenge longstanding beliefs associated with gemological science. His presentation will draw upon his experience as an author of two books and 100 articles about gemology.
“There are certain ideas that gemologists accept as being indisputably true, and Richard, who is a highly respected expert in his field, is not afraid to contest these ideas,” said Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok. “Those who enjoy independent thinking and are unafraid to have cherished beliefs challenged, will not want to miss this evening.”
A native of the U.S., Hughes has spent many years in Asia, where his interest in gemstones was first kindled. He has visited most of the major ruby and sapphire deposits around the world, setting the stage for his popular book, Ruby & Sapphire. His latest book, co-authored with Vlad Yavorskyy, is titled Terra Spinel.
Hughes is the senior vice president of Hong Kong-based Sino Resources Mining Corporation, which mines sapphire in Laos and Australia.
GIA Thailand’s Gemstone Gathering is a free event that begins at 6 p.m. on June 29 in the “White Room” of the lower lobby of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly known as the Pan Pacific), Lumpini Park, Bangkok.
Due to limited seating, please RSVP by June 27 to the GIA Laboratory Bangkok at 02-632-4090; or call the GIA Thailand Campus at 02-237-9575. For more information, visit www.giathai.net.
