Tom Moses to Address GIA Thailand’s 29th Gemstone Gathering

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Oct. 15, 2009 – The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Thailand announced today that its next Gemstone Gathering will present “An Evening with Tom Moses,” in Bangkok on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Moses, senior vice president of GIA Laboratory and Research, will provide an update on HPHT-treated diamonds and the latest advances made in colored stone services.

“Tom is one of the world’s most accomplished gemologists and a leading contributor to GIA research efforts for more than 20 years,” said Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok. “In his role as head of GIA’s global laboratory and research operations, he has been instrumental in developing and maintaining grading and identification standards used worldwide.”

Under Moses’ leadership, the GIA Laboratory expanded its reach and capabilities to include grading facilities, research and service centers in Mumbai, Bangkok, Johannesburg, Gaborone, Hong Kong and Antwerp; and expanded its network of third-party consolidators into virtually every major gem and jewelry center around the world. He also helped the GIA Laboratory launch grading and identification services for synthetic diamonds and pearls, and expanded its services for colored stones.

“We look forward to what he has to say about the most recent discoveries from GIA Research and what advances the GIA Laboratory is making in colored stone services,” Scarratt said.

This is the 29th Gemstone Gathering hosted by GIA Thailand. The free event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Dusit Thani Hotel.
