The Loupe: GIA World News Winter 2009 Issue is Now Available Only Online
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Jan. 21, 2009 – The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced today that the Institute’s award-winning quarterly news magazine, The Loupe: GIA World News, Winter 2009 issue is now available in the publication’s new online-only format.
“We are excited about the transition of presenting The Loupe in its permanent digital layout,” said Amanda Luke, editor of The Loupe. “This makes it possible for our readers to access the publication at their convenience, at anytime, in an easy-to-use manner. I encourage everyone to subscribe now so you don’t miss any of the important information on GIA’s education programs, alumni features or latest laboratory news.”
Online subscribers will also have the option to print out PDF versions of the issue or specific articles, according to Luke.
The Winter 2009 cover story, "A Legacy of Learning," features five industry families who have relied on GIA's education programs over the years to help carry their multi-generational businesses into the future. The other articles related to this piece include a look at GIA's Education department and its programs, with profiles of key staff members; information on new regional centers that make GIA's Lab classes easily accessible; and how the hands-on learning environment of the Lab classes has helped recent graduates.
Readers will get updates on happenings at the Institute, including a lecture and photo exhibit by GIA Chief Gemologist John Koivula, who has spent 45 years photographing the microworld of gemstones. The issue also features a look at the Institute's first law enforcement training class, where FBI agents and police officers met for two weeks to learn gemological identification skills to help them prevent gem fraud. Lively photos and anecdotes tell the story of GIA researchers' recent trip to Africa in search of ruby and tanzanite, and the Alumni Travel Program's tour of Asian cultured pearl farms.
