Top Names in Gems & Jewelry to Speak with Aspiring Professionals
CARLSBAD, Calif. – May 14, 2012 – Renowned designer David Yurman, jewelry manufacturing executive Ann Arnold, retail jeweler Lex Graham and leading auction house executive Rahul Kadakia will be panelists at GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) Jewelry Career Fair on July 30 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. Aspiring jewelry professionals – including those in retail, design and manufacturing – will also be able to meet with job recruiters; attend an expert session on jewelry trends; and spend one-on-one time with volunteer career-coaches. A Treasure Trove of Gem Discoveries
CARLSBAD, Calif. – May 3, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will host its next Gemstone Gathering on May 15 in Bangkok, Thailand. Kenneth Scarratt, GIA’s managing director of South East Asia and director of the GIA laboratory in Bangkok, will present “Unexpected Treasures,” highlighting exceptional gems – and their stories – he has seen over his three decades as a gemologist, from royal jewels to recent discoveries. Gems & Gemology Turns a New Digital Page
CARLSBAD, Calif., – April 24, 2012 – All of the peer-reviewed research on diamonds, colored stones and pearls presented in Gems & Gemology (G&G), the leading journal in its field, is now available on the iPad. African Youth Discover the Science of Gems
CARLSBAD, Calif. – April 17, 2012 – Thirty-five students from Johannesburg, South Africa, and Gaborone, Botswana, eager to get their first glimpse of gemology – from rough crystals to finished jewelry pieces – recently learned the basics of gemology, mineralogy and geology. Two GIA Junior Gemologist Program™ workshops, sponsored by GIA (Gemological Institute of America), were held in Johannesburg on April 11 and in Gaborone on April 12. Read more.

Global Jewelry Crime Investigators Turn to GIA
CARLSBAD, Calif. – April 11, 2012 – More than $1.5 billion of jewelry and precious metals were stolen in the U.S. in 2010, with a recovery rate of only around 4.2 percent, according to the Uniform Crime Report issued by the FBI. To help combat gem and jewelry-related crime, law enforcement turned to GIA (Gemological Institute of America) for expertise and assistance. In March, 22 special agents and detectives from international agencies completed a custom-designed intensive two week program at GIA world headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., that armed them with the skills, knowledge and network to help successfully identify and recover gems and jewelry involved in criminal cases. GIA and University of Dar es Salaam Sign Memo of Understanding
CARLSBAD, Calif. – April 2, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Africa have signed a Memo of Understanding. This initiative gives 20 individuals the opportunity to apply for GIA’s Accredited Jewelry Professional intensive (AJPi) program, which will provide them with knowledge of diamonds, colored gemstones and jewelry. GIA Fosters Gem Education in Southern Africa
CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 22, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the University of Zambia (UNZA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide individuals the opportunity to enroll in GIA’s Accredited Jewelry Professional intensive (AJPi) program. UNZA, the largest university in Zambia, will select 20 students to participate in the five-day AJPi class held on the UNZA campus. GIA’s grant, valued at $25,000, will provide the instructor, curriculum and materials. GIA is also bestowing two specialized gemological microscopes to the university. Read more.

GIA Expert Explores Optical and Structural Phenomena in Gemstones
CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 21, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will host its next Gemstone Gathering on March 28 in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Laurent Massi, GIA education director in Thailand, will present “Phenomenal Gemstone Phenomena” by defining and classifying optical and structural effects that add to a gemstone’s allure. GIA Appoints Stephen B. Morisseau as Public Relations Director
CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 16, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has appointed Stephen B. Morisseau as the Institute’s public relations director, effective immediately. The role expands the communications team, reinforcing GIA’s mission to protect the public trust in gem and jewelry purchases. GIA Provides Education Grant to University Of Nairobi
CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 15, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has provided an education grant valued at $25,000 to the University of Nairobi (UoN) in Kenya. The grant and a Memorandum of Understanding between the institutions enable 20 individuals in the East African country of Kenya to enroll in GIA’s Accredited Jewelry Professional intensive (AJPi) program. GIA Accepting Fall 2012 Scholarship Applications
CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 1, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will accept scholarship applications for the remainder of 2012, downloadable on its website, beginning March 1 through April 30. Scholarship recipients are eligible to participate in laboratory classes in the U.S., a variety of eLearning courses worldwide and the Institute’s campuses in Hong Kong, London, the Middle East and Taiwan. GIA 4Cs iPhone App Now Available
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Feb. 27, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has announced that its 4Cs application (app), released last year for the iPad, is now available for iPhone. The free app educates and engages consumers about the 4Cs (Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight) of diamond quality through videos and interactive tools. Read more.

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Feb. 23, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) will host GemFest Basel on Sunday, March 11 at the Basel Convention Center in Switzerland. GIA Hosts First Graduate Gemologist Ceremony in Shanghai
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Feb. 22, 2012 – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) recently hosted its first Graduate Gemologist (GG) graduation ceremony in Shanghai, China for 10 students who completed the program. GIA Museum Shines Spotlight on Rare Book Collection
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Jan. 26, 2012 – GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) latest museum exhibit, Tablet to Tablet: Treasured Pages from Past to Present, showcases more than 26,000 pages from rare books on gems, minerals, and natural science dating back to the 15th century. The collection is on display at the GIA museum in Carlsbad and will be open to the public until early summer 2012. Read more.
