Senior PeopleSoft System Administrator
Department: Information Technology – Systems Development
Reports To: Global Director, Applications & Database ServicesPrimary Function
Plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of GIA’s primarily PeopleSoft ERP and Oracle-based database systems’ processes. Primary duty is to assess, in coordination with management of each Department, PeopleSoft ERP and Database System needs; to design and develop new processes and procedures, or modifications to existing processes and procedures, to meet these needs; and to coordinate with and provide direction to members of the Information Technology department to implement and ensure the proper functionality of the system throughout GIA, by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities
- Provides administrative and support activities in the areas of PeopleSoft Middle tier and Oracle database on Linux and Windows operating systems. Installs and configures upgrades and applies patches for licensed PeopleSoft and non-PeopleSoft modules at GIA, which includes, but is not limited to, PeopleSoft Portal, PeopleSoft HRMS, PeopleSoft Payroll, PeopleSoft Student Administration, PeopleSoft Finance, PeopleSoft CRM, Open Text TEAMS - DAM, EOSi’s Library Catalog Management.
- Provides support on production, development, and testing environments, which includes, but is not limited to, creating and managing database instances, creating and managing users, granting privileges, establishing and following backup and recovery procedures, monitoring systems, maintaining data integrity constraints, data import/export, monitoring lock contention, setting up data replication procedures, and tuning databases.
- Installs, configures, and sets up tools for monitoring application, database, and system performance.
- Installs, upgrades, configures and provides support for PeopleSoft and other ERP Modules licensed at GIA including HRMS, Payroll, Student Administration, CRM Marketing, etc.
- Creates and maintains operating system scripts for database and application maintenance.
- Provides PeopleSoft and database administration support function for databases at Carlsbad, New York, and other GIA campuses.
- Provides support on database administration function for Web development projects.
- Establishes and adheres to service level policies, and offers solutions and suggestions for required performance and availability.
- Monitors log(s), activity, and resource utilization of production environment.
- Works with application programmers to insure that application problems do not adversely affect production operations.
- Acts as liaison between application programmers and DBMS vendor to report and resolve problems.
- Provides after hours on-call support for critical database issues.
- Communicates effectively, gets along with coworkers and management, and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B. S.) in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field from a four-year college or university; and three to six years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work independently, to use good judgment and exercise discretion on matters of importance to the general business operations of GIA.
- Ability to perform several tasks within one day, to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines with the appropriate attention to detail.
- Current knowledge of best practices related to PeopleSoft ERP applications database administrative activities.
- Experience with Oracle, MS SQL Server, development and monitoring tools on Linux, windows, and UNIX operating system.
- Understanding and working knowledge of web technology is desirable.

Safety & Security Risk Coordinator
Department: Security & Safety
Reports To: Director, Corporate Security & SafetyPrimary Functions:
Under the direction of the Director, Corporate Security & Safety, and in concert with GIA Corporate Security and Safety Policies, this position is responsible for assisting in the discovery, analysis, and response planning for safety and security risk to GIA operations and personnel by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities:
- Reports to and closely coordinates with the Director, Corporate Security & Safety in enhancing GIA management and response in the identification and coordination of security and safety risks in general that might impact GIA operations or personnel on a global basis or site specific basis. Works closely with the Global Safety Manager to track safety, health, and environmental issues at all global GIA locations.
- Serves as the central collection person, collates, and provides analysis of GIA security, safety, health, and environmental incident reports on a global basis.
- Identifies negative trends evident in analysis of security and safety incidents and advises management on suggested responses.
- Assists in the tracking of international laws and regulations that impact GIA safety and security operations.
- Provides support to the Global Safety Manager and GIA global sites in the implementation and administration of safety, health and environmental programs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Political Science, International Relations, Intelligence Analysis or related discipline; and three years of global risk and analytical related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior related security experience required.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, Power Point and ability to present information in a graphic format.
- Willing and able to respond to emergency or crises situation on a 24 hour basis.
- Ability to perform under pressure and respond rapidly to breaking situations within tight timelines.

Metrologist
Department: Research
Reports To: Director, Research & Development / NY Identification ServicesSummary:
Improves methods for analysis of gemological measurement equipment to increase the quality of data; and/or develops new measuring instruments; and implements the change process throughout the GIA laboratories globally, by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Interacts with external vendors, as well as internal customers in Quality Control, Process Development, Research laboratories and senior management to do the following:
1) Works jointly with R&D team to improve existing or develop new measuring instruments. Serves as interface between research teams and production teams.
2) Applies advanced mathematical and engineering knowledge (measurement science, mathematics, physics and engineering) to develop methods for analysis, and conducts calibration of devices and instrumentation, as follows:
a. Identifies and utilizes appropriate test and measurement procedures
b. Recommends calibration standards and test equipment
c. Writes or assists in the development of test plans and test procedures
d. Uses statistics to analyze measurement standards and processes
e. Analyzes and solves calibration problems
f. Performs corrective actions to address identified measurement problems
g. Evaluates new calibration methods and procedures based on analysis of data
h. Maintains calibration laboratory and/or quality systems.3) Maintains responsibility for the following instruments, plus others as needed: microbalances, 3-D non contact measuring devices, color analysis measuring devices, and spectral analysis measuring devices.
4) Maintains responsibility for development of maintenance and calibration schedules and corresponding tests, as well as management of related documentation.
5) Maintains responsibility to ensure that laboratory instrumentation at multiple locations is properly calibrated and on-schedule to comply with established guidelines.
6) Troubleshoots and repairs malfunctioning laboratory equipment as necessary to maintain critical workflows; and performs routine calibration and maintenance on a variety of complex analytical equipment and instrumentation.
7) Keeps updated on knowledge of new technologies, processes and methods.
8) Travels domestically and/or globally using commercial transportation resources.
9) Communicates effectively, gets along with coworkers and management, and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises staff as it relates to test and measurement procedures and techniques.

Managing Editor
Department: Gems & Gemology
Reports To: Director, Editor-in-Chief, Gems & GemologyPrimary Functions:
This position is primarily responsible for the editorial management and production of Gems & Gemology print and digital publications, by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains responsibility for the management of manuscripts, photography, illustrations and multimedia for both internal and external contributors to Gems & Gemology print and digital publications.
- Ensures manuscripts/content remain on schedule through liaison with internal and external contributors and reviewers to ensure production deadlines are met.
- Maintains responsibility for correspondence with internal and external contributors (e.g. thank you letters, etc.)
- Obtains, organizes, and manages photography, images, and illustrations in appropriate file formats (e.g., EPS) for media production department and/or third-party vendors.
- Develops concepts and evaluates needs, with input from authors and editors, to develop line art and select photos and arrange photography, and other multimedia.
- Selects and negotiates prices with printers and digital publishers.
- Makes continuous improvements in internal processes and procedures to streamline and optimize workflow (e.g., updating and maintaining editorial management system).
- Maintains tracking sheets and production schedules.
- Manages subscription service (e.g. ViaSubscription).
- Tracks and reports subscriber numbers and revenues to team and top management (weekly and monthly).
- Tracks and reports online metrics, such as Google Analytics (weekly and monthly).
- Participates in strategy and process planning with media production team.
- Works in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and Editor on planning and executing page plans for Gems & Gemology print and digital publications.
- Manages Gems & Gemology’s web publishing accounts (e.g. Metapress).
- Registers Gems & Gemology print and digital publications with U.S. Copyright Office.
- Addresses intellectual property issues pertaining to photos and articles originally published in Gems & Gemology.
- Writes and edits articles and other content to ensure quality control, continuity, logic, and GIA in-house style.
- Collaborates with the Editor-in-Chief and Editor on production decisions for Gems & Gemology’s print and digital publications, from layout to the finished product.
- Executes management decisions on content, direction, and production for the publication.
- Supervises pre-press and printing processes.
- Executes marketing plans for Gems & Gemology’s print and digital publications, with direction from Marketing department and the Editor-in-Chief. This includes, but is not limited to, subscription and back-issue promotion, as well as subscription renewals.
- Collaborates with the Associate Editor on maintaining the Gems & Gemology website, developing and writing weekly updates, and preparing items for the biweekly GIA Insider. Strategizes and decides on content, with the Gems & Gemology team.
- Communicates effectively, exercises high degree of discretion and independent judgment, works cooperatively with co-workers and management, and interacts with others effectively and professionally under pressure.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B. S.) from four-year college or university; and a minimum of five years related experience in book, magazine, or journal management and/or training for both print and digital publications; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Excellent editing and proofreading skills required.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with software applications such as Word, Excel, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills are required.
- Ability to work closely with employees at all levels and with outside contributors and vendors is required.
- Gemology or other technical background preferred.
- Familiarity with SharePoint (or similar, such as MS Project or Basecamp) and Salesforce is preferred.
- Practical use and knowledge of Content Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard) and how these systems operate is also preferred.

Security Officer
Department: Safety and Security
Reports To: Manager, Security and SafetyPrimary Functions:
Ensures a secure and safe environment for GIA personnel, students and the public, by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities:
- Patrols the Institute grounds while providing a visible presence.
- Aids in parking enforcement.
- Represents GIA as a professional security representative to employees, students and visitors.
- Directs and/or escorts visitors and vendors as needed.
- Assists in special tours of the Institute.
- Submits written reports to Security Supervisor on observations regarding security, maintenance or safety issues.
- Responds to alarms as directed.
- Provides GIA Education Department with additional security or safety issues.

Provides copywriting and project coordination services in support of the Marketing & Advertising Department's initiatives, by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities:
- Develops messaging that is clear, engaging, fresh, and intriguing; create a clever turn of phrase; and consistently deliver compelling and persuasive copy.

Responsible for providing quality and efficient client service through the daily management of the client service and gemological service teams, by performing the following duties.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages Client Service and Gemological Service teams, providing strategic direction to improve processes and procedures, training, and performance evaluations to develop and improve the client service functions.
- Supports the Director, Lab Operations with daily operation of client and gemological service centers.
- Works closely with Lab Operations Director (and Human Resources Manager, as appropriate) to include the development, analyses and implementation of staffing, training, scheduling, and reward/recognition programs for staff.
- Works as a member/leader of special or on-going projects that are important to area/process improvement.
- Provides daily direction and communication to client service employees so that clients are assisted in a timely, efficient and knowledgeable manner.
- Provides continual evaluation of processes and procedures and suggests methods to improve area operations, efficiency and service to clients.

Instructor, Gemology (On-Campus/Traveling Lab)

Reports To: Manager, Education (Carlsbad)Primary Function
Provides a positive, constructive and creative learning environment for students in the On-Campus Gemology Program and On-Campus and traveling Lab classes, by performing the following duties.Responsibilities
- Instructs students in Lab classes worldwide in Diamond Grading, Gem Identification, Colored Stone Grading, Pearl Grading and various seminars utilizing gemological equipment including, but not limited to microscope, spectroscope, refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope, audio-visual aids, and other materials to supplement presentations.
- Instructs students in the On-Campus Gemology Program and On-Campus Lab classes in utilizing gemological equipment including, but not limited to microscope, spectroscope, refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope, audio-visual aids, and other materials to supplement presentations.
- Assists in curriculum development, creating educational delivery, and course materials for the On-Campus Gemology Program and Lab classes.
- Imparts appropriate and relevant course material consistent with GIA’s reputation, standards, and integrity.
- Addresses student concerns, complaints, or issues promptly, and effectively interfaces with Dean of Students, Manager, Education (Carlsbad) and/or other appropriate Education staff as needed for further action.
- Counsels students regarding academic performance and methods for improvement.

Graduate Gemologist Diploma; and a minimum of 3 years related practical gem/jewelry industry experience.- In addition, Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university, and industry coursework, such as Graduate Jeweler Gemologist (GJG) or Accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP), Jewelry Manufacturing Arts (JMA) diplomas; or equivalent combination of education and/or training.
- Ability and willingness to meet all minimum requirements mandated by federal, state, local, accrediting, and other regulatory bodies to be a GIA Instructor.
- In-depth knowledge of gemstones, diamonds, gem identification equipment, and understanding of the jewelry industry.
- Ability to demonstrate a command of theory and contemporary knowledge, and continuing study in the field.
- Ability to effectively present course material and provide instructional feedback to students.
- Ability to set up classrooms conducive to learning and meeting GIA standards.
- Ability to effectively communicate within time constraints of onsite meetings, with a diverse group of students at various levels of experience and/or knowledge.

Security Manager, New York
Department: Security and Safety
Reports To: Director, Corporate Security and Safety and Senior Security Manager, AmericasPrimary Functions
Plans, establishes, and maintains security and safety procedures for the New York Laboratory to ensure a safe and secure environment, works closely with the Senior Security Manager, Americas, in the execution of GIA security and safety operations in New York with the potential of an expanded role working with GIA facilities in Africa and Europe with the Director, Corporate Security and Safety, by performing the following duties.Responsibilities
- Manages Security operations and staff, and functions as Safety Officer overseeing the New York safety program and serves as the advisor for details of emergency response planning and implementation.
- Prepares and maintains New York Security manual which outlines and establishes measures and procedures for a secure working environment; revises and updates security measures to include new or revised policies and regulations.
- Participates in corporate security projects as directed.
- Develops and administers departmental budget.
- Participates in the recruitment, hiring and training of new Security staff. Evaluates the overall performance, development, and salary reviews of the Security staff. Administers positive reinforcement and discipline.
- Coordinates closely with the Global Safety Manager for all issues related to GIA safety, health, and environmental issues, including compliance.
- Provides best practices and/or model security and safety plan templates as appropriate for New York and possibly for international locations to include Africa & Europe.
- Ensures effective processes and procedures are in place to discover, monitor, and evaluate threats.
- Organizes and coordinates periodic security and safety risk assessments, and ensures follow-up tracking of resulting recommendations.
- Oversees the development and exercise of security threat response plans.
- Ensures that cooperative working relationships are established and maintained with local law enforcement, regulatory agencies, fire/emergency services, and other community organizations, as appropriate.
- Conducts periodic on-site inspections to verify security and safety program quality and effectiveness and ensures follow-up for closure of any gaps identified.
- Maintains responsibility for the installation, maintenance and upgrade of all security equipment including cameras, monitors and recording devices.
- Oversees and maintains security card access system, security alarms and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system and tape library.
- Manages employee access to premises, maintenance and upgrade of all card access systems. Provides access to authorized personnel or visitors to classified material or into restricted areas.
- Oversees opening and closing procedures via Security Supervisor / Coordinators. Ensures the safety of employees as they enter and exit the premises. Maintains communication with building security and local law enforcement, as appropriate.
- Serves as “on-call” company contact 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Maintains communication with alarm companies to keep access information accurate.
- Identifies security issues and makes recommendations for solutions. Initiates or conducts investigations as appropriate and/or as directed.
- Implements physical and technical security standards and countermeasures that balance determined risk, compliance issues, cost effectiveness, and support of business objectives. Oversees and advises site management on performance of vendor contracting and services.
- Participates as the security representative on business project teams that may be instituted from time to time.
- Complies with applicable federal and state regulations and restrictions relating to company operations.
- May be required to travel as needed domestically and/or internationally utilizing commercial transportation resources.
- Communicates effectively, gets along with coworkers and management, and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises GIA New York security and safety personnel. May be responsible for coordinating with and advising the Africa and Europe Region Security and Safety Contacts (in coordination with site management) at each of the GIA sites in the region.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related field preferred; and ten years related security law enforcement or military experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of five years supervisory experience in the field of security or loss prevention.
- Strong level of proficiency utilizing sophisticated computerized systems.
- Knowledge of access control and CCTV systems.
- Knowledge of federal and state hazardous materials and safety laws.
- Knowledge and experience of first aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and emergency response.
- Understands operation of emergency shut-off systems and emergency equipment.
- Effective communication skills. The ability to think through processes, ask questions and communicate expectations.
- Expertise in the development and supervision of loss prevention and safety programs.
- Willingness to travel with the potential of occasional travel to South Africa, Botswana, London and Antwerp and/or other sites as needed.
- Current and valid driver’s license
- CPR certificate or willingness to obtain upon hire
- Guard card or willingness to obtain upon hire
- Chemical agent card (preferred)
