Alumni View: Education and Involvement: A Perfect Combination
Volume 15-Issue 4-Fall 2006

  Starla Turner

Starla Turner, G.G., GIA Alumni Executive Council Chair.

I'm a learner – a studier, a reader, an inquisitive mind. I'm also a firm believer that if I come away with one bit of new information from a class, it was worth taking. The four intense, information-packed days I recently spent in San Diego provided enough new material to keep me studying until the next Symposium.

The Gemological Research Conference (GRC) provided both compatible and opposing opinions about issues ranging from the formation of gem material to the mining and marketing of gemstones. It was helpful that I read Gems & Gemology, which laid some groundwork for the in-depth science that many speakers covered.

I encouraged everyone to check out the Poster Session, where we had the opportunity to shake hands and talk with some of the most amazing talent in the gemological world. It also turned out to be a perfect forum for me to scout speakers for my local chapter meetings.

My mind was racing with all the new information gleaned from GRC and the Poster Session, and the Symposium sessions provided even more. I breathe gemology, but I live retail, so the panels, keynotes and debate centers brought me back to the real-world, work-related issues I deal with every day. I listened, learned and am already implementing ideas.

The social opportunities were exceptional, too – it's been years since I've shook so many hands and met so many new alumni. I felt fortunate to meet GIA students, share meals with people from around the world, and rekindle friendships with those I met at past trade shows and events.

I finished my week with the Alumni Association luncheon, where we rolled out the plans for the exciting changes taking place in the Alumni Association (see article, left).

As challenging as it is to sum up all that I learned in one week, I did come away with a reminder of how important education and personal connectedness are.

Whether you take advantage of local chapter meetings, enroll in the new continuing education classes or attend alumni events at various trade shows, I encourage every graduate of GIA to get involved. It will, without a doubt, help you navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

Starla Turner, G.G.
