Display Cases Shed New Light on Collection
Volume 13, Issue 4 - Fall 2004

Five new display cases in the Institute’s Salvador J. Assael Grand Atrium display some of GIA’s magnificent jewelry, gem and mineral specimens. State-of-the-art fiber optic lighting and polished mahogany exteriors protect and accentuate the pieces so visitors can better appreciate them.

This collection of cut sapphires is from the

which was first discovered in the late 1890s.

Display cases - Venetian glass balls

Venetian glass beads are formed by melting brightly
colored glass canes. The molten glass balls are then
rolled over 24k gold foil followed with more melted
glass to encase their rich, glowing beauty. Gift of
Michael Anthony Jewelers, Inc.

Display cases - rhodochrosite

Argentina is a source of massive
rhodochrosite, such as this slice from
a stalactite. Gift of William Larson.

Display Cases - adamite

Rare adamite specimens from Ojuela,
Mexico, are highly sought by mineral
enthusiasts for their beauty, but their
crystals are too soft to be used in
jewelry. Gift of William Larson.
