What is the GIA Color Scale?

Answer:

Splendor - Diamond Color Scale

D, E, F: colorless

G, H, I, J: near colorless

K, L, M: faint yellow or faint brown

N, O, P, Q, R: very light yellow or very light brown

S through Z: light yellow or light brown

Any color beyond Z will get a fancy color designation. Please see the Winter 1994 issue of Gems & Gemology to see our fancy color designations in the article, "Color grading of colored diamonds in the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory". You can order back issues of Gems and Gemology online, or by email at dortiz@gia.edu.
