What are synthetic HPHT diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds grown using the High Pressure / High Temperature (HPHT) method are being produced by several companies around the world. This process uses equipment which mimics the pressure and heat-filled environment that natural diamonds are formed in at great depths in the Earth.   Synthetic diamonds have been produced in a variety of colors including yellow, blue, green, pink, red, purple, and colorless.  Although they are nearly physically, optically and chemically identical to their natural, mined counterparts, these synthetic diamonds can be identified by a trained gemologist using standard gem-testing equipment and techniques.
