Remarks by Thomas M. Moses, Senior Vice President, GIA Laboratory and Research, to World Federation of Diamond Bourses, Mumbai, Nov. 13, 2005
Note: During the recently concluded meeting of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) in Mumbai, Thomas M. Moses, Senior Vice President of the GIA Laboratory and Research, addressed laboratory topics under discussion by attendees. At the conclusion of his remarks, Moses also talked about the results of the investigation of the GIA Laboratory, which were announced by GIA on Oct. 18. The verbatim text of those remarks follows:
I both realize and can fully appreciate that there have been rampant rumors and speculation swirling in the industry around GIA. I want to briefly address this issue. As I do, please understand, that I am constrained by our lawyers in what I can tell you, and importantly you should not read anything into this restriction.
First —and appropriately so— neither I nor any of GIA’s senior leadership were involved in the investigation that was led by outside counsel, and I am not and was not privy to the discussions between the investigators and the Board. [Full Text]
GIA Announces Enhancement to Verification Service and No-Fee for Limited Period
The GIA Laboratory has expanded and enhanced its diamond grading Verification Service to include a new assessment of the results reflected in the original report, to ensure that Laboratory grading policies were correctly applied during the grading process.
In addition, for the six month period beginning Nov. 1, 2005 and ending April 30, 2006, the Verification Service will be offered at no fee. Standard shipping and handling rates apply. After April 30, the service will continue to be provided at the prevailing rate – 50 percent of the applicable diamond grading fee.
The Verification Service, which has been in place for many years, allows anyone to submit an original GIA Diamond Grading Report or, more recently, Diamond Dossier® to the GIA Laboratory with the corresponding diamond to determine if it matches the stone described in the original report. The results of the new analysis will be returned to the client in a letter along with the diamond and original report.
For information on sending items to the GIA Laboratory for this service, please contact GIA Laboratory Customer Service at 760/603-4500 in Carlsbad, California or 212/221-5858 in New York, New York. Requests may also be sent via e-mail to laboratorycustomerservice@gia.edu.
