New Book from Mineralogical Association of Canada

Since 1969, the Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC) has sponsored short courses at its annual meetings and published the notes in book form. MAC has just released Geology of Gem Deposits, the 37th volume in the series, in conjunction with a short course held in Yellowknife, Canada, on May 21–22 (see www.nwtgeoscience.ca/yellowknife2007).

Edited by Lee A. Groat, this 288-page book contains 10 chapters that review the current understanding of diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and jade deposits, as well as some of the lesser-known colored stones. The contributors for each chapter include some prominent geologists:

  1. Diamond (Thomas Stachel)
  2. The Geology and Genesis of Gem Corundum Deposits (Gaston Giuliani, Daniel Ohnensetter, Virginie Garnier, Anthony E. Fallick, Michel Rakotondrazafy, and Dietmar Schwarz)
  3. Emerald (Lee A. Groat, Gaston Giuliani, Dan D. Marshall, and David Turner)
  4. Non-Emerald Gem Beryl (David Turner)
  5. Chrysoberyl (Daniel Marshall and Lori Walton)
  6. Tanzanite and Tsavorite (Lori Walton and Daniel Marshall)
  7. Topaz (Daniel Marshall and Lori Walton)
  8. Gem-Bearing Pegmatites (William B. “Skip” Simmons)
  9. Jade Deposits (George E. Harlow, Sorena S. Sorensen, and Virginia B. Sisson)
  10. Colored Gem Stones from Canada (Bradley S. Wilson)

The book costs $50 (in U.S. dollars, except in Canada). For MAC members, the cost is $40. To order Geology of Gem Deposits, visit www.mineralogicalassociation.ca.
