GIA: Gems & Gemology: Publishing in G&G

How can you help your article be considered in a timely manner for publication in G&G? As important as a topic’s timeliness and relevance to the journal’s readership is the quality of the submitted manuscript package. The following general tips will help a paper get through the review and editorial process:

Read and follow the Gems & Gemology Guidelines for Authors (HTML PDF).
Choose a topic with a practical application to gemology, such as a new synthetic, simulant, treatment, identification method, or gem locality. Review articles on gemological topics are also welcome.
Do a thorough review of the literature. Reference all facts taken from other sources. Adhere to G&G style in the reference list.
Organize the paper in a logical, simple, straightforward fashion. A research paper should have an introduction, background, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. Review the suggested outlines that have been developed for specific subjects.
Papers with incomplete materials and methods are likely to be returned unreviewed. Give the exact number of samples, their colors, sources, and weight range. Describe every test and how it was conducted, and state how many (and which) samples were used for each measurement.
Report results for every test. Discuss the results and state conclusions clearly. Use tables to simplify the text. Consider using the G&G Data Depository for large tables and supplementary information.
Include all figures and figure captions. Make line drawings and captions as complete and accurate as possible, and send the original, highest-resolution versions of any photos. Keep text and electronic figure files separate; please do not embed figures with text in a single document.

If you have questions, look for similar articles in earlier issues, or contact one of the editors. Feel free to obtain suggestions from the editorial staff on a proposed outline before writing the actual article.

No paper makes it through the review process without at least some revision requests from the reviewers and editors. Answer all reviewer queries, even if it is to disagree. A paper must be acceptable to at least two reviewers to be published.
