About the Cover

This 217.8 ct Mogul emerald is a fine example of the early Colombian stones that were treasured by the Mogul nobility in India. The Islamic prayer in this dramatic representation includes the date 1695 AD. This and other famous Colombian emeralds, together with a detailed description of mining and marketing activities in Colombia, are discussed in Dr. Keller's article in this issue. The Mogul emerald is the property of Allan Caplan, New York. Photograph © 1981 Harold and Erica Van Pelt.
