About the Cover

As alchemists once claimed they could turn lead into gold, General Electric Co. has discovered a sophisticated method that actually turns diamonds from brown to colorless. The lead article in this issue compares the properties of several GE POL diamonds before and after processing, while the Gem Trade Lab Notes section introduces a new GE achievement, the transformation of brown diamonds to attractive pink and blue stones. The brooch on the cover illustrates the beauty of natural-color pink (the center stone is 1 ct) and colorless diamonds. Courtesy of Ishaia Trading Corp., New York.
