About the Cover

This issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of Richard T. Liddicoat’s editorship of Gems & Gemology, with a compilation of articles representing different aspects of his contributions to gemology and the gem and jewelry community. In honor of his leadership in the field, the tourmaline species liddicoatite was named after him in 1977. Much of this tourmaline has come from Madagascar’s Anjanabonoina mine and contains remarkable color zoning, as shown by this polished slice (10 cm tall) and described in a feature article in this issue.
