Of the 500 or so items that comprise the hoard, numerous loose gems, jewels and other items offer a unique glimpse of Renaissance jewelry and tell us much about the global trade in gemstones during the late 1500s and 1600s.
The Cheapside Hoard, as this treasure is known, is on display in its entirety at the Museum of London untill April, 2014. GIA's principal gem photographer, Robert Weldon was offered a unique opportunity to see and photograph several of the treasure's most significant pieces.
