Alumni Awards Program

The Alumni Awards Program is an annual opportunity to recognize and show appreciation for alumni members and chapter leaders who are committed to industry professionalism and the development of the GIA Alumni Association. All award recipients are publicly acknowledged, leading to recognition within the global community of GIA Alumni and the gem and jewelry trade. This is a meaningful member benefit program because alumni vote for the members they think have had the most impact.

Nominees for each chapter award are elected annually by global alumni membership. These awards include the GIA Alumni Chapter Achievement Award (member) and the GIA Alumni Chapter Leadership Award (chapter officer). Every Chapter Achievement Award recipient and Chapter Leadership Award recipient will be entered in the annual nomination pool for the International Awards. These awards include the GIA Alumni International Achievement Award (member) and the GIA Alumni International Leadership Award (chapter officer).


THE GIA ALUMNI AWARDS PROGRAM BENEFITS INCLUDE

  • Publicity: Recipients of alumni awards are recognized with articles in the GIA Insider and AlumConnect, in press releases, and at the annual Tucson alumni event.
  • Member appreciation: The alumni awards program is particularly meaningful because alumni members – who are in the best position to know – vote for the recipients. All alumni are encouraged to participate by nominating each year.
  • Chapter recognition: Active chapters are recognized for their organization by having the ability to participate and award Chapter Awards. Participation also allows the possibility for further recognition if one of their members wins an International Award.

For alumni members not associated to a particular chapter (due to the non-existence of an active chapter in their geographical region) they are still encouraged to participate and are pooled to a special unaffiliated Chapter Achievement Award. Annual recipients of this award are also eligible to be included as a nominee in the International Achievement Award.

    Chapter Achievement Award (member)

    A chapter member who:

    • Demonstrates and furthers integrity, ethical business practices, and professionalism
    • Achieves and is dedicated to a career in the gem and jewelry industry, academics (continuing education) and chapter activities


    Chapter Leadership Award (chapter officer)

    A chapter officer who:

    • Demonstrates mentorship
    • Welcomes new members
    • Promotes GIA’s nonprofit mission
    • Promotes an active, growing chapter through innovative programs and activities
    • Promotes continuing education for members
    • Sets an example for chapter membership by demonstrating integrity, ethics, professionalism, leadership, and commitment to maintaining and enhancing a vital, dynamic chapter


    Nomination guidelines include:

    Who can participate in nominating and who is eligible to win? - All members of the GIA Alumni Association worldwide. GIA employees are not eligible to participate in awards nominations or receive awards.


    How do I nominate? - It’s easy and online!

    • GIA will send a call for nominations to all alumni
    • Nomination requests are sent in July, and must be submitted by the deadline designated on the nomination form
    • Nominees should be considered for their contributions in the previous 12 months (July 2010 – June 2011)
    • Links to the nomination forms are included in the call for nominations
    • Complete nomination forms and submit online
    • The Alumni staff will distribute the award nominations to the appropriate chapter for consideration
    • All awards are judged solely on the information provided on nomination forms
    • Chapter officers review the nominees and award Chapter Award recipients. Individuals not affiliated to a specific chapter are reviewed by a GIA panel (See below for more information about the unaffiliated Chapter Achievement Award)


    Can alumni members nominate if there is not an active chapter in their region? - Yes. All alumni members are encouraged to participate. 

    • Individuals not affiliated to a particular chapter, (because an active chapter does not exist in their region) can nominate or self-nominate one individual for a special unaffiliated Chapter Achievement Award
    • These unaffiliated nomination submissions are pooled and a single unaffiliated Chapter Achievement Award is rewarded
    • These submissions will be judged solely on the information provided on nomination forms and awarded by a GIA panel
    • The recipient of the single unaffiliated Chapter Achievement Award will be entered in the pool for the International Achievement Award


    Are all chapters eligible to present Alumni Chapter Awards? - No, chapters must fulfill the following criteria to participate: 

    • Recognized by the GIA Alumni Association
    • Established for a minimum of six months
    • Considered active by hosting a minimum of two activities in the previous 12 months.


    What differentiates Chapter Awards from International Awards?

    Chapter Awards

    • Nominated by members of their chapter
    • Nominees are reviewed by chapter leaders and awarded within the chapter

     

    International Awards

    • The nomination pool is created from the recipients of the Chapter Awards
    • Chapter presidents submit their Chapter Awards recipients by the stated deadline in order for them to be entered as nominees for the International Awards
    • Nominations for International Awards are reviewed by a GIA panel

    International Achievement Award (member)

    The winner will be an alumni member who best meets the criteria of the Chapter Achievement Award. One individual will be chosen from the global pool of that year’s Chapter Achievement Award recipients to receive the International Achievement Award. These nominations are judged by a GIA panel and awarded at the annual Alumni event held in Tucson the following year.


    International Leadership Award (chapter officer)

    The winner will be a chapter officer who best meets the criteria of the Chapter Leadership Award. One individual will be chosen from the global pool of that year’s Chapter Leadership Award recipients to receive the International Leadership Award.
