Make-Up Policy
There is no provision for making up missed class hours. The attendance policy allows for a limited number of absences. Students are strongly advised to avoid missing scheduled quizzes or exams. Students who are not present for a quiz or an examination receive a grade of zero. There are no exceptions.

Lab students who exceed the maximum number of absences must make up the missed time within one year in order to earn a final grade and a letter of completion for the class.

Completion Time
On campus students must complete each course or program within a time frame not to exceed 1.5 times the normal duration. Students who do not meet this requirement must repeat the entire program from the beginning, again paying the tuition in full.

Distance Education students who exceed the allowed completion time are dropped from their course or program and a final grade of “EXP” (Expired) is entered on their official transcript.

Student Progress
Satisfactory Progress Policy. Instructors or administrators may call a conference with a student at any time to discuss his/her progress. Students are advised in writing of their academic progress at a minimum at the 25% and 50% points in their course or program. Each student’s class participation, homework, projects, quizzes, and examinations
are evaluated.

Students who do not meet the satisfactory progress standards are placed on Academic Probation. A written probation notice will state the conditions and length of the probationary period. Students who are receiving VA benefits will be dismissed if they do not meet the satisfactory progress policy.

The satisfactory progress policy for on campus students who are enrolled in a combination
program of more than one course or program, such as the Graduate Gemologist Program, is applied individually to each component as shown in the following table. The following
tables show the minimum satisfactory progress requirements per course or program.

Distance Education students must complete their course or program within the allowed completion time. Requests for extensions must be made prior to the end date, and are granted for good cause and at the sole discretion of GIA management. Students who do not complete their course or program within the allowed completion time, including any granted extensions, will receive a final grade of “EXP” (Expired) on their official record and must re-enroll, pay the current tuition rates, and successfully complete that
course or program, in order to earn academic credit. Does not apply to School of Business students, who must abide by the published “Add/Drop/Withdrawal” policy (see page 74)
and graduation requirements (see page 81).
