Q: What are Carat Points?
A: The Carat Point System of Recognition is an award system that bestows points for GIA Alumni-approved career-enhancing activities and then permanently records them. Carat Point values are awarded to GIA Alumni Association members who participate in approved activities such as attending GIA Alumni and professional events; becoming a chapter officer; reading and acknowledging select articles from Gems & Gemology, The Loupe: GIA World News. GIA Insider and successfully completing the G&G challenge.
Q: How will earning Carat Points help to give me recognition as a jewelry professional?
A: As a GIA Alumni member, instant verification of your credentials and industry-related activities are available through the GIA web site to those interested in locating an experienced gemologist, jeweler or appraiser. This listing of your credentials and carat points represent the extra steps you've taken to further your knowledge about the jewelry industry.
Q: Can I receive retroactive Carat Points for the industry-related activities I have already participated in?
A: Since launching the new Alumni Association at the Tucson Gem shows in February 1998, all participants have the same opportunity to take part in GIA-approved industry activities. This gives members of the Alumni Association the chance to enhance their careers by learning about the latest advances within the industry.
Q: How are the Carat Points recorded?
A: Carat Points are updated on a weekly basis in the Alumni Online Directory here at the Alumni web site. Credentials are also listed. If any questions arise, please e-mail the Alumni Association at alumni@gia.edu
Q: How do I apply for Carat Points?
A: The Carat Point System of Recognition is based on an honor system. It is up to you to record your activity on a Carat Card and send it in. You'll find Carat Cards in the most recent issue of The Loupe: GIA World News, at local chapter meetings or by e-mailing alumni@gia.edu. You can also submit your points online - click here for the online Carat Card.
Q: Do I have to join my local GIA Alumni chapter to earn Carat Points for attending chapter meetings?
A: No. Once you are a graduate,you can receive Carat Points for your attendance at chapter meetings. To find chapter meeting locations and topics, check the listings for chapter events
