You couldn’t miss the sounds of country music in Tucson when more than 450 guests, many donning cowboy hats and boots, kicked up their heels during the GIA’s annual Dance Party and Auction at the Marriott University Park Feb. 4.
Held in conjunction with the Tucson Gem and Mineral shows, the country-themed event helped raise $16,000 for the Alumni Endowment Fund. The event was preceded by the Industry Awards Presentation, where GIA President William E. Boyajian and representatives from the Development department recognized members of the Association and In Kind gift donors for their dedication and generosity toward the Institute in 2004.
Brook Ellis, vice president of Education, also took the opportunity to announce Robert S. Lindsay and Richard “Dan” Waltman as this year’s recipients of the Richard T. Liddicoat scholarships.
Each received a full scholarship for the Graduate Gemologist program – Lindsay for the On Campus program and Waltman for Distance Education.
“I sincerely congratulate you both for being chosen for this award named after our former chairman of the board,” Ellis said at the event. “My advice to you is to study hard.”
Boyajian and Patricia Syvrud, director of In Kind Gifts, presented 13 donors each with a plaque in honor of their non-cash contributions during the ceremony. Many of their gifts, such as fine quality gemstones, jewelry and photographs, will be put on display at GIA or used in educational programs.
Several chapters and Association members received awards in four different categories: Outstanding Chapter of the Year, Chapters of the Year; Outstanding Chapter Members of the Year and Volunteers of the Year.
“This is the time of year when we get to honor those who have tirelessly worked to make their Alumni Association a successful organization,” said Rose McKenna, manager of the Alumni Association. “We’re very proud to highlight this year’s special group.”
