GIA is committed to helping students of all ages discover a love of the science of gems. In 2003, GIA created a program to teach gemology, geology and mineralogy to students and youth groups. Taught at our headquarters in Carlsbad, California, the program meets federal curriculum guidelines and supports existing school district and youth group science programs.

GIA Junior Gemologist Program Descriptions

For Grades 4 through 12:
Gemology, mineralogy and geology are taught in an inspiring, entertaining way by GIA instructors and members of the gem and jewelry industry. The material is presented in an interactive scientific workshop that incorporates hands-on-training with the tools of the trade. Children use loupes and microscopes to study gems. They also take home a colorful gemology book, a GIA souvenir pencil and a special gift: a real gemstone!
