A Gentleman. A Gentle Man.
![]() | Richard T. Liddicoat loved talking with people. He knew everyone’s name and had the rare ability to speak to you as if you were the most important thing in his life at that moment – because you were. He created an atmosphere of warmth, care and concern and loved new ideas and innovation, which he encouraged with everyone he met. He wanted to hear not only about your latest professional accomplishments and challenges, but how your family was doing. |
In his later years, when he was able to make an occasional visit to the Carlsbad campus, it didn’t take long for word of his presence to trickle through the offices and cubicles of colleagues eager to say hello. If you were lucky and your path crossed his, he would greet you with a warm hello.
RTL was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was charming, loved to dance and had a wry sense of humor that could leave listeners more puzzled than amused. He loved sports, particularly golf and football, and always rooted for his alma mater, the University of Michigan. His natural curiosity extended well beyond the realms of gemology and he loved to explore the world around him, whether that was in a museum or on a drive through the country.
He inspired us to be the best we could be and touched and encouraged countless jewelry professionals in his lifetime. The model he was, the legacy he left, and the vision he had for gemology and the jewelry industry – always in service to the public – will be with us for generations to come.
